Looking for something fun to do as a family this summer—without having to travel far? A trip to the North Dakota State Fair could be just the ticket!
The 2017 fair is just around the corner, and with nine days of activities and adventure from sunup to sundown, it's a great bet for families with kids of all ages to enjoy. Here are a few of our favorite things about the NDSF that we're sure your family will love, too.
Check out our NDSF Family Fun Pack GIVEAWAY (details at the end of this blog).
Food, Glorious Food
It's OK to admit: the first thing that probably comes to mind when you hear the words “state fair” is all the delicious FOOD. Mini donuts, juicy cheeseburgers, fresh squeezed lemonade, chocolate-covered everything on a stick...there really is something for everyone. Even the pickiest little eaters will find something to chow down on at the fair, and since the theme is food on the go, it's all quick and easy to eat (even from the tray of a stroller!).
The grandstand acts are big draws for adults at the fair, and there's always fun to be had on the carnival rides, but what about entertainment that's kid-friendly and a little easier on the wallet? Don't worry, there's plenty of it to be found! There are several free stages located throughout the fairgrounds with interactive shows ranging from racing pigs to musicians and everything in between. There are also themed days like Pride of Dakota Day, when vendors set up underneath a giant tent that's fun to stroll through with kids (and they'll come home with lots of freebies!).
If it gets too hot walking around outside, there are several buildings to explore, too. The State Fair Center is home to things like a 4-H exhibit and award-winning artwork on display. There's a bunny barn that's guaranteed to impress the littlest fairgoers, and even an indoor (air conditioned!) play area for small children who need to burn off some energy. Three commercial buildings have aisles and aisles of shopping that make for a good escape from the sun when your family needs a break, too.
The Animal Kingdom
The only thing that might outnumber people at the state fair are the animals—and they're a must-see when you visit. There are several livestock barns that my kids love wandering through. Want to see a sheep getting shorn? Visit the Livestock Expo Barn. Want to see cows being milked? Take a stroll through the Dairy Barn. And the daily competitions are fun to take in with your kids, because many of the animals are being shown by kids just like them.
The best reason to pay a visit to the fair as a family is simple: it's a great opportunity to create lifelong memories. I still remember going to the state fair with my family when I was growing up—riding the Scrambler with my big brother, catching Tootsie Rolls from the curb as the Saturday morning parade rolled by, being dazzled by the twinkling lights below from atop the ferris wheel. Doing something special like attending the state fair with your immediate family makes an impression on even the youngest members in the group. These long, hot summer days are prime time for memory making as a family, and the North Dakota State Fair is the perfect venue.

When I was a kid, the North Dakota State Fair was a summer staple. Growing up just a few blocks from the fairgrounds meant my brothers and I lived the fair frenzy a little longer than most; we loved seeing those first trucks roll in carrying pieces of the ferris wheel, ticket booths, and carousel, folded in the back at odd [...]
Looking back, it's funny to admit: I was a little nervous about our family trip to Medora—would this top tourist destination live up to the hype? And the dreaded question that every mom considers: will my kids be bored? What is it about Medora that makes it North Dakota's top travel destination?Just a quick two-hour drive from [...]
The modest town of Stanley is a gem along western North Dakota's Highway 2, bursting with family-friendly activities and friendly faces. My family took an impromptu trip to Stanley recently (a short 45-minute drive from our hometown of Minot) and found three places that will have you wanting to plan your own day trip to this quant community very [...]
There are plenty of ways to define North Dakota.Open skies. Robust agriculture and energy industries. Cold winters. Friendly people with a touch of that Fargo accent. And for us, it's home. But for a few months out of the school year, there's really only one way to describe our state: Class B basketball. High school athletics is an integral part of many [...]

Small businesses are an integral part of the American economy—and North Dakota entrepreneurs are certainly doing their part. Last weekend, nearly 300 vendors (including Bison Booties!) set up shop at the Bismarck Civic Center for the largest-ever Pride of Dakota Holiday Showcase. The ND Department of Agriculture oversees the Pride of Dakota organization, a state brand designed to identify North Dakota-original products [...]
Perhaps more than any other change in the calendar year, fall's arrival comes with telltale signs: technicolor leaves painting the scenery brilliant golds and reds; cool, crisp air that begs for sweaters and boots; and of course, all things pumpkin. One of the best places to enjoy the season—and a host of fall-inspired family fun—is at Papa's Pumpkin Patch near Bismarck, North [...]
