Oasis on the prairie: Coteau des Prairie Lodge

Oasis on the prairie: Coteau des Prairie Lodge

Do you ever need to just get away

We've all been there.

I used to think that "getting away from it all" meant elaborate (and expensive) tropical vacations. But, I recently discovered another kind of oasis right here here in North Dakota—at Coteau des Prairie Lodge.

North Dakota getaway Coteau des Prairie Lodge

Coteau des Prairie Lodge, located in North Dakota's southeastern Sargent County, is "away from it all" in all the right ways.

This is the kind of beautiful, wild prairie land that just doesn't exist much anymore. And it's far from being "out of the way;" it's just 90 miles south of Fargo, ND, and a very doable half-day drive from many cities in North Dakota, South Dakota, and Minnesota.

This area truly embodies the heart of rural North Dakota—and is beautiful to boot. CDP Lodge has deep roots in agriculture and is, quite literally, perched on a bluff above a cattle ranch and fields of lush, no-till cropland.

PhotoRx photography weekend at Coteau des Prairie Lodge North Dakota

I visited CDP Lodge last fall for a weekend PhotoRx photography workshop for DSLR camera users. The workshop, led by Phillip Breker of PhotoRx Media, is designed to help amateur photographers learn to use their cameras beyond "auto" mode, and features both classroom and field instruction. I enjoy taking photos and had a working knowledge of my camera going into the class, but I left the weekend with additional information and technique that has definitely improved my photography. I highly recommend the workshop for both the practical training and the chance to spend a relaxing weekend exploring one of North Dakota's most beautiful rural settings.
Note: if you book a PhotoRX session, be sure to let them know Bison Booties sent you!

The lodge is open for numerous other events like beer dinners and concerts, and can also be rented for private family or group gatherings.

It's a quiet, restful place, filled with the kind of raw beauty North Dakota is known for. And the nighttime stars? There's nothing quite like gazing up at the wide open North Dakota skies away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

The elegantly rustic lodge is built from native North Dakota ponderosa pines, and is absolutely gorgeous with interior balconies, 10 lodge rooms, a grand gathering area, cozy reading nooks, and a commercial kitchen.

And the views from the lodge are something to behold. From the third floor loft, you'll be treated to a stunning 360-degree view of the patchwork prairie and rolling plains below.

Beyond the beautiful scenery, CDP Lodge prides itself in being about the people and the experience. The Breker family owns and operates the lodge with ease and warmth—the quintessential hosts (even after I pestered them with endless questions). You'll leave the lodge feeling welcomed, well taken care of, and wowed by the North Dakota spirit so freely shared.

And, oh yes, the food! The PhotoRx weekend included all meals, each more delicious than the last, sourced from local growers and expertly prepared. The lodge's honor system bar is fully stocked with an impressive collection of local microbrews in addition to national names, sodas, and hard alcohol.

I can't wait to plan a return trip to Coteau des Prairie Lodge. This place is magical and they've got it figured out: the food, the lodge, the hospitality, the sunsets and sunrises — and it's all right here in North Dakota!
